Categorized first posts in new structure

Me and WordPress go way back. Here’s proof from 2016, and that was 10 years in already.
If you are not willing to write a page about it. Do not use it as a category or tag!

That is the simple criterium I am using to organise ánd prune my 165 post tags. This way I leave space open for branching out to new topics, and I make sure that I group and interlink my website’s content in clusters that make sense.

I can not explain in words exactly why, but the following just seems logic to me:

Match (sub-)categories and tags with corresponding pages

houdyk.com/wordpress/themes/astra
(That’s: Site / Topic-page / Subtopic-page / Detail-page)

Each Category, subcategory and tag, will be dedicated to the informational pages in the corresponsing levels:

domain / category / sub-category / tag

By using this organisation, it forces me to think twice to use a tag. Using it requires writing a full hierarchy if it does not exist yet. This way I am sure I will be more inclined to use an exisitng tag, or add one to a subcategory that is adjecent.

This post is a perfect example. I place it in the subcategory wordpress/themes/ and use the tag Astra, because I know I have five other posts about this theme and I plan to do some more. Why? Well, my most successfull youtube video is about the Astra theme, so I thought thought would be a good way to attract visitor to this website with the same topic. Not for getting web development clients, but to help more DIY people solving a nasty issue.

As a consequence I will have to create the WordPress page, a Themes- (and later Plugins-) page, and the Astra page. I think it is worth the effort. It worked well restructuring another website of mine, so that is why think I should proof this concept of having categories and tags supporting pages in the WordPress CMS.

Ranking Pages versus Posts

It always strikes me that Pages rank so much better than Posts. At least that is my experience with the sites I manage. It is probably the clear structure that makes it more clear how pages are related. Having over a hundred tags for 100 posts cretainly does not help in organising content!

If you are not willing to write a dedicated Page for your (sub-)category or tag, at least use the WordPress archive page for the ‘Cat’ or ‘Tag’ to write a description.

Your way of expressing gratitube for me introducing the concept of matching your website structure with your tagging conventions is…. by adding a link to this post on your personal blog. Please place your site in the comments for others to discover it! Use a short description ofcourse, explaining your tagging strategy. I’m sure more people would like ot learn about it.

Untill the next one.
